4 Tips for Organizing Your Mudroom Before Spring

May 06, 20252 min read

If you are lucky enough to have a mudroom in your home, you know that these spaces are fantastic for keeping the mess out of the main living areas. But without a plan, they quickly turn into the family’s dumping ground—leading to chaos, clutter, and stress. Stay tuned for four simple tips to organize and systematize your mudroom before springtime.

Tip #1: Reevaluate the Space

How you use your mudroom matters. Take a step back and think about what actually happens in the space each day—are shoes piling up, backpacks getting tossed on the floor, or mail stacking up on every surface? Once you understand how your family uses the area, reorganize it with systems that support those daily tasks, making it easier to keep things tidy and functional.

Tip #2: Choose Smart Storage Solutions

Avoid the temptation to buy storage bins and baskets without a plan—without intentional organization, they just become more clutter! First, decide how the space will be used, then choose storage that truly supports those needs. If you don't have a ton of room, consider your vertical space for hooks on the wall for jackets and backpacks. A shelf is also a great place for bins to house hats, sports gear, or extra school supplies. Be sure to establish a simple system the whole family can follow to keep everything in its place.

Tip #3: Get Moisture Under Control

Mudrooms tend to be damp thanks to wet shoes, coats, and umbrellas, which can lead to musty smells and even mildew. To keep moisture under control, consider adding a washable rug, a tray for wet shoes, or even a quiet dehumidifier. This is also a great time to launder winter coats, hats, and gloves to stow away for next year or to donate if  the kiddos have outgrown them. A little planning goes a long way in keeping your mudroom fresh and functional!

Tip #4: Style the Space with Thoughtful Touches

Your mudroom may be a hardworking space, but it can still be stylish and inviting! A fresh coat of paint, decorative hooks, and a well-placed plant can instantly elevate the look. Add a bench for putting on shoes and make it cozy with a couple of seasonal throw pillows. Install a floating shelf to display a candle, a family photo, and some greenery, or hang artwork to bring personality to the space. Your mudroom is a functional space for your family. Let's make it an inviting space that says "Welcome Home".

“I cannot recommend Karen Swart and her team enough! We were in the Kansas City area for a full summer, filming “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning,” and Karen and her team were our behind the scenes death-cleaner helpers! They helped our Death Cleaners move quickly, efficiently, and thoroughly through people’s homes - and they did it with heart. Thank you, Karen! Stay Gentle!”
